Celebrating the Queen
Lightness of Being by Chris Levine 2007 |
60 works of art, like the 60 years of rule behind Her. The whole United Kingdom, and London in particular, is getting ready to celebrate six decades of Elizabeth II.
May 17, two weeks ahead of the June 2 date of the formal celebrations in honor of Her Majesty's jubilee, the NPG will open the exhibition The Queen: Art and Image. Through portraits and official photos, press pictures and works by contemporary artists, the exhibition evokes the spirit of the many years of Elizabeth
rule, showing the changes in the way
She was represented through time as well as changes in the concept of monarchy.

Among the works exhibited, there will be the portrait by Pietro Annigoni, painted in 1969 on commission from the NPG, the one by Gerhard Richter from 1966, as well as the portrait by Lucian Freud painted in 2000 for the Royal Collection. There will also be a host of photos among which images by Dorothy Wilding, Cecil Beaton, Annie Leibovitz, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Thomas Struth, which impress an image of a Queen that changes, gets old and suffers pressures from the Head of State.
