The journey of the torch has come to an end and the opening ceremony can begin.
A majestic sight: James Bond, preceded by Queen Elizabeth, was thrown from the helicopter parachuting into the crowd kicking off the parade of icons of the reign of Her Majesty Elizabeth II.

The Opening Ceremony titled 'Isles of Wonder',by director Danny Boyle, reflected the key themes and priorities of the London 2012 Games, based on sport, inspiration, youth and urban transformation.
It was a Ceremony 'for everyone' and celebrated contributions the UK has made to the world through innovation and revolution, as well as the creativity and exuberance of British people.
Valentina Vezzali of the Italian Olympic team carries her country's flag during the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium. Five-time gold medal winner Vezzali is performing in her fifth Olympic Games in the women's Fencing, which starts on Saturday.
The spectacular finale of the event saw the Olympic Cauldron, formed of 205 copper petals representing the competing nations coming together in London for the Games, ignited by seven young Torchbearers nominated by Britain’s past and present Olympic and sporting greats. Designer Thomas Heatherwick's work was a highlight of the ceremony at the Olympic Stadium, watched by 80,000 spectators.
